7 Essential Videography Tips for the Summer

Summer is the best time for videography. The long, sunlit days, vibrant colors, and everyone wanting to be outside make it a prime season for capturing stunning video. However, summer’s intense light and heat can present unique challenges. To make the most of your summer shoots, consider these essential tips and preparation strategies:

1. Plan Your Shots Around the Golden Hours

Summer days are long, but the light is often harsh around midday. The best times for filming are during the golden hours—shortly after sunrise and just before sunset. The light is softer, warmer, and creates a beautiful glow that enhances your images. Plan your shoots around these times to avoid the stark midday sun and to take advantage of the ideal lighting conditions. With cooler temperatures, you and your team will be more comfortable for your duration outside. Although these are the perfect hours, that doesn’t mean you have to shoot during these times. This next step will help you prepare for shooting during peak sun hours!

2. Stay Hydrated and Protect Yourself from the Sun

Summer heat can be draining, and the sun can be unforgiving. Always carry plenty of water to stay hydrated and use sunscreen to protect your skin. Protecting your skin is a priority, unless you want to get burnt - we all know the pains of red and peeling skin. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun’s glare, which can also help you see your camera’s LCD screen more clearly. Not being able to see your shot is a challenge when shooting in beaming sunlight.

3. Use UV Filters for Lens Protection

Summer often brings intense sunlight, which can lead to lens flare and other issues. A UV filter not only protects your lens from dust and scratches but can also reduce the haze caused by UV light. This simple accessory can help maintain image clarity and contrast, especially when shooting in bright conditions. It’s standard to have UV filters on your lenses for everyday usage. Carrying some lens wipes can help you clear the dust as well.

4. Polarized and Neutral Density Filters

Just like some sunglasses, your camera can also enhance the colors of nature! Consider using polarized filters to reduce glare from reflective surfaces like water or wet pavement. This type of filter can also enhance the colors of the sky, greenery, foliage - making your summer photos pop with vibrant hues. Neutral density (ND) filters are also handy for exposing your image correctly. Especially when you want to stay at a F1.4 or F2.8, an ND filter is perfect and versatile to bring on summer shoots.

5. Keep Your Gear Cool

Prolonged exposure to heat can affect your camera’s performance. Keep your gear in a cool and dry, shaded place when not in use. If you’re shooting in direct sunlight, use a camera bag or cover to shield it from the heat. When transitioning between air-conditioned environments and the outdoors, allow your gear to acclimate gradually to prevent condensation inside the lens and camera body. Sometimes when your camera overheats, this can hinder your shoot as you allow your camera to cool down. So you should be mindful of preparing for overheating conditions!

6. Prepare for Changing Conditions

Summer weather can be unpredictable. Be prepared for sudden changes by bringing weather-resistant gear and protective covers for your camera. If you’re shooting in areas prone to sudden rain showers or high humidity, having a plan and backup gear will help ensure you don’t miss out on perfect shots. If you’re on budget, a trash bags will work or having an umbrella on hand will work!

7. Enjoy the Process

Finally, remember that summer videography is as much about enjoying the season as it is about capturing it. Take time to explore, experiment, and enjoy the beauty around you. The more relaxed and present you are, the better your videos will reflect the essence of summer.

With these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your summer shoots with family, friends, clients, etc. So grab your camera, embrace the sunshine, and bring your vision to life this summer!
