Golden Globes 2025 Recap

Hollywood's biggest names gathered last night for the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, a celebration of the year's finest in film and television. The anticipation was palpable as the nominees, including the likes of Adrien Brody for his powerful performance in "The Brutalist" and Demi Moore for her transcendent role in "The Substance," awaited their fate. The red carpet was a breathtaking display of fashion, with stars like Zendaya, Ariana Grande, and Timothée Chalamet captivating onlookers with their stunning ensembles.

Emelia Pérez

The one winner that stood out and gained four new awards out of their 10 nominations was Emelia Pérez. Being honest, this film never sparked any interest and we hadn’t viewed it before the awards. It was shocking to learn this film is a musical-thriller, and for this “musical” to win against the iconic, highly anticipated, Wicked, we were astonished. This film has been through some controversy involving the director, Jacques Audiard, and his knowledge, or lack there of, of the queer community and Mexican culture. No matter if you loved this production or hated it, Emelia Pérez still came up on top with their Golden Globes wins. Regardless of the film's polarizing reception, Emelia Pérez's triumph at the Golden Globes proves that exceptional talent can break through even the most contentious of backstories, earning recognition in a world that often values innovation over tradition.

Demi Moore

The iconic Demi Moore won her VERY FIRST major acting award, after being an actress for the past 45 years. Moore won in the category best performance by a female actor in a musical or comedy, for her outstanding role in The Substance. During her incredible acceptance speech, Moore stated, “I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it. Maybe I was complete. Maybe I would I've done what was supposed to do. And as I was had kind of a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance, and the universe told me that you're not done.” Her win not only marks a long-awaited recognition of her remarkable talent, but also serves as a testament to the enduring power of reinvention and the boundless potential that still lies ahead, no matter where you are in your journey.

Who was robbed?

A controversial question, but an interesting one to look into. The most shocking to me was Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande for their roles in Wicked. From the huge anticipation that this film had, to the skyrocketing numbers it had at the box office, this film was a major, worldwide hit. Yet, both the lead actress (Erivo) and supporting actress (Grande) did not get recognized for their beautiful performances. The other heavily stacked category was Best Actor in Drama or Comedy. With nominees like Timothée Chalamet, Daniel Craig, and Sebastian Stan, the category was flooding with talent. In my mind, and maybe we are baised, Timothée Chalamet was robbed of this award. No negativity towards the winner Adrien Brody and his fantastic performance in The Brutalist, but Timothée Chalamet taking on the role of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, to me was impeccable and beyond what most put into a biopic. While both snubs and surprises left us questioning the awards' decisions, it's clear that talent and critical acclaim don't always align with recognition, reminding us that sometimes the most memorable performances are the ones that go uncelebrated on the big stage.
